So.
On one of my favorite blogs, The Dainty Squid, which is basically this woman who bikes a lot and collects teeth and dyes her hair different colors who is also an amazing blogger and photographer, she does these Friday recaps where she talks about things she finds online that she thinks are super cool.
So, for the better part of this year, I'm going to try and do the same.
Because why not? It's the internet!
So without further ado.
Here's what's really driving my train right now.
(That's right. DRIVING MY TRAIN.)
1. Longform Podcast

Where are all the amazing podcasts out there that really dig into the what and where of how writers do what they do? I feel like there should be more. Maybe I'm just not finding them because I use CASTRO and it doesn't really let you search podcasts for content.
Anyway, Longform is basically my new This American Life. It's This American Life as told by the people who are out there finding and writing the kind of complicated human stories people like me eat up like so much spare rib.
(I would say "candy" but I'm not eating sugar right now. Maybe spare ribs have sugar in them...)
I'm in the process of reading Emily Bazelon's Sticks and Stones, as the result of listening to her on this podcast. The book is both great and kind of horrifying because it's sort of a catalog of different people's experiences with bullying. Which, you know, FUN.
2. Ponchos
You know when you see a piece of clothing somewhere and it sets off a little firecracker in your head.
That's me and ponchos.
I tripped over this while I was in LA driving around with Heather in Topanga and we came across this tiny store called Pebbles.
Which, first of all, TOPANGA, how gorgeous is this place? It's like magic and it's so close to the city!
And low and behold. PONCHOS.
Is everyone going to be wearing ponchos this season?

I hope so.
They are so comfy!
Also they make your average everyday elevator selfie feel very celebratory.
As you can see here.
Needless to say, I work in an office with an elevator mirror and I work on the top floor.
So I amuse myself.
3. Transparent
I am so excited to watch this show.
I watched the pilot when it came out and I was totally blown away by this portrait of family life, as created by Jill Soloway. Of Afternoon Delight -ness. Of Wifey TV.
The Pilot for Transparent TV actually made me think about writing and how any of us writes about family. It had this incredible ensemble feel to it. Like Six Feet Under (which I am also in the process of rewatching) but with the packaging stripped away. I think with so many shows, the family are the background for whatever is happening with the protagonist, instead of being part of what's happening to them.
It's a milder version of shows about teenagers where the teenagers are basically mini adults and the parents are just like these little bookends who sort of show up at dinner and say "How was your day, honey?"
Anyway, I haven't seen it yet. But I'm psyched.
To watch this show, you need to get Amazon Prime. Which I do not have, yet.
Don't worry I won't wait long. I did this with Netflix too. The content will be well worth it I KNOW.
4) Marimekko
The other day I was at the airport and this super sleek looking girl walked by wearing all black. Like, black leggings, shirt, jacket, glasses and so on. She looked like a chopstick, or like a very polished onyx chess piece. It was very cool. And I thought, wow, I would love to have this amazing all black wardrobe and just put on the same black clothes every day.
And then I thought, I will never be that person. Because while I aspire towards minimalism, I am a pattern gorger at heart.
I mean, I'm covered in tattoos. Clearly I'm someone who loves wearing ART.
I love when people mix up patterns like Dom Streater from Season 12 of Project Runway and I LOVE LOVE the prints at Marimekko.
I mean, come ON!

All available online at www.marimekko.com |
On our last LA trip Heather and I splurged and purchased a Marimekko beadspread. So now I wake up under big bright poppies every morning.
Not a bad way to start your day!
So.
In other news, about a month ago, my grandmother, Beverly Lambert, passed away.
She was an vibrant, full-forced, opinionated, funny lady. And I will miss her.
