Alternative comics have long been a place where diverse sexualities and gender
identities are represented. Gilbert Hernandez and Jaime Hernandez paved the way in the 1980s with their groundbreaking and award-winning comic book series Love and Rockets. Today's landscape of alternative cartooning reflects a realistic range of experiences and identities for queer, gay, and trans-identified people, perhaps most notably in works by Michael DeForge, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Ed Luce, and Mariko Tamaki.

Panel - Diversity

Time: 1:00 – 2:00pm
Room 28DE

A current and recurring topic of conversation in the Science-Fiction and Fantasy
community is the lack of diversity: both in regards to the authors who craft these fantastical tales and the characters they create. We demand diverse books! Ethnic, religious, gender, racial, physical ability, and sexual diversity are underrepresented in SFF but these authors are here to tell you that their stories speak for themselves; they seek to create worlds similar to our own, where people from various walks of life are represented and cross paths. Readers will find these authors and the tales they spin as empowering and fascinating as ever. Join authors Soman Chainani (School for Good and Evil), Cece Bell, Mariko Tamaki, Scott Sigler, and Judd Winich (Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth) as they discuss Diversity in Science-Fiction and Fantasy!
